Michelle’s story – Making ‘my heart sing’ during COVID-19

Personally, COVID-19 hasn’t really impacted me in a bad way and has actually been a lovely opportunity to spend quality time with my family. I have really missed my support workers though, as they have not been able to come to my home during this time.

I usually like to keep busy, though daily life has slowed down a bit since COVID-19. I now only have sessions via video chat with my support workers, and my public speaking events have been cancelled. My community outings are also no longer happening for the time being. At first, this was a bit hard to get used to, but I have become accustomed to it and realise how fortunate I am. It’s so important to never take things for granted.

I have decided to take up a new project during COVID-19. My sister is always doing online courses and she inspired me to get creative and learn something new. I came across a diploma in soap making and thought it may be something I’d be interested in. The course is all online and doesn’t have any set deadlines, which I love, as it allows me to work at my own pace. I have my support workers assisting me in different ways throughout the week.

I’ve really enjoyed studying again, learning all of the different ingredients and how they can help your skin. When this course is finished, I’d like to continue learning about how to make body products and give them as gifts for my friends and family. I would love to have a little bath and body business one day.

I’ve learned a lot about myself doing this course. I now understand that even though I have a brain injury and severe short-term memory problems, with support and repetitiveness, I can still study and that makes my heart sing.
